Araw ng Kagitingan

Beyond the Call  of Duty

Valor. That's what we, Filipinos, have been holding for so long. The entire history of the Philippines, valor could be observed. There's even a day for that— a day to commemorate bravery of Filipinos, and determination in facing great danger like battles.

Back then, we used to be colonized by foreign people: Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese. Those three hold no difference to one another. They were all the same. And because of them, we rose. Bravery grew. The greatness of Filipino soldiers and fighters during the World War II marks this special day. Around April 9 in the Philippines each year, The Day of Valor is being commemorated.

Briefly, The Day of Valor, also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, commemorates the heroism of Filipinos and American Soldiers when the Japanese occupied the Philippines during World War II. The history of this event includes the time when thousands of Filipinos were forced to take a long hike known as the Bataan Death March. Due to starvation, dehydration, and diseases, a lot of them died before they could reach the camp. During the centuries of being colonized by the three countries, a lot were sacrificed. Thousands or maybe millions of Filipino soldiers fought for freedom, peace, and democracy so valiantly.

Since then, Filipinos have marked April 9 as the Day of Valor as a commemoration to the bravery and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers during World War II. It's the dau to remember their courage and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

Also, the Day of Valor serves as a big reminder of what costed us to achieve freedom. It's the values of patriotism, unity snd solidarity that blooms every April 9th of each year. Valor Day inspires everyone of us to uphold the principles of justice and democracy, and to strive for peace and reconciliation in the face of conflict.

By commemorating this day, we honor the legacy of those who gave their lives in defense of freedom, and we reaffirm our commitment to preserving their memory for generations to come.

Perhaps the best line that I say every Valor Day is "It's okay. We'll get up again the next day. Padayon." Something about this line just gives me the strength to get up and do just good, and maybe better. For me, Valor Day is a day to remember to be brave. It is a day to gain courage and resilience. Because just as much as we need food to live, we also have to remain strong in every hard situation life may give us as a challenge.
